Going to the JoAnn Superstore in Brandon, FL on Saturday and wanted some input for a list of useful tying materials at JoAnn. Tying materials that you use and have found useful. This is a cross-post also at the Yahoo Warm Water Angler Group list. Thanks.
Beads of every make, shape, color, and size, jewelry elastic, and Kreinik braids! Small crochet hook (for tying knots in hopper legs), magnifier, thread rack, small plastic boxes (for organizing), and embroidery floss (makes FANTASTIC midges). And I’m just getting warmed up!

Check out the needle point and embroidery section!
There is a lot of things you can use there.
Floss of all colors, and some neat metalic
floss in copper, gold and green -good for nymphs.
“Pearl Braid” for streamers and buggers.
They may have rafia or swiss straw too.
Make sure it is the plastic kind, NOT
the paper.
Robert: JoAnn’s is always offering coupons for up to 50 percent off. I have obtained quite a few plastic storage boxes using this method for a lot less than if I bought them at a fishing store.
Never mind, Tim. According to the JoAnn web-site, they have a 50 percent off event starting on the 29th at that store. The JoAnn site says it will take up to 8 weeks for me to get mailed in-store coupons and flyers. I’ll be there Saturday. Unless they have in-store coupon flyers at the store, I don’t think any of that will do me much good. Thanks anyway.
Jim sent me some needles a while back that I’m still using on the Dremel but if I see them, I’ll get some more. Looks like I’ll be a kid in the candy store .
I have also made ggod use of the 50% off coupons, mostly for craft/scrapbook storage containers which I use for all of my fly tying materials. Some of the big ones on wheels are great if you ever take your tying stuff with you.
Glues, various wires and metal flaked threads for ribbing, natural color lights as JC mentioned, last time I was there I found kids foam play blocks that are on their way to becoming bass bugs on my dremel, scissors and other cutting utensils if you cut foam or fur into strips, I think most everything else has been mentioned at least once.
I usually go thru JoAnn or Michaels and walk every row and keep my imagination wide open. You can find all kinds of neat things.
Biots, peacock herl, beeswax, rolling storage containers, Ott-lites (like JC said), rotary cutter and cutting mat.
They have iron-on transfer paper for my computer (I printed out a photo of the big one and ironed it onto a pre-stretched canvas, suitable for framing, so I don’t need a replica for now).
Also, for our holiday TU banquet, I’ll get jewelry making supplies to make non-fishing related gifts for folks to buy at the auction. I’m currently intrigued with glass etching supplies to put flies or fish onto cocktail glasses for the auction.
I will agree on the Peacock from there. Leave some of it in the sun just a day or so and you get a great buggy Brown color to it while still having all the the light reflecting effects it had in Green.
Also pick up a ball of Camouflage yarn lots of real buggy colors in that one ball of yarn. Olive, Black, Tan and Dark Green. Cut them up to make other colors of dubbing or use it as is. The Olive works really well for the simple British yarn nympth.
I would suggest the double-closure bead boxes. I get mine at Michaels, as they are closer but they have them at JoAnns.
These suckers are the perfect hook boxes. You can but size 26 hooks in and not have them slip out. For $3.97 a pop (for the 14 bin boxes) I’ve got boxes for all my hooks. I just use a label maker to label the bins (use clear label tape) and I can see all my hooks and whats getting low.
Oh, by the way, CHENILLE!!! JoAnns in the motherload of chenille. The only place that has more is Arricks Fly Shop in West Yellowstone.

I was there yesterday with TLOTH (The Lady of the House) to pick up some material for a project she has in mind…as we went out the door, I briefly examined a “sewing kit bag” (or something to that effect)…looked to me like it might make a good travel fly tying kit bag. I gotta go back…what will the TLOTH say when I say “I’m interested in JoAnn’s”???
Hmmmm.
If you never hear from me, contact NBC’s Dateline, they seem to cover these domestic jealosy slayings.
