flies for sea-run brown trout?

So I’m moving back home this summer, which means my salmon fishing days will be limited at best…so I’m planning on drowning my sorrows by pursuing sea run Salmo trutta on my home turf. Despite growing up a fly line’s length away, I am not very experienced with sea-trout fishing and I was wondering if anybody had suggestions on good flies(in particualr multi- fly combinations to try)

Thanx in advance, folks.

Brad

Brad, …

Browns in the river or in the estuary ??

In the river, … they’ll do the same thing as our sea run brookies and shut down the feeding 'til october. We use Big Bombers and Bugs … as well as dries down to #18-20 (Wulffs, Brown Hackles, Hoppers).

Wet are anything from Black ghosts to muddlers.

If they act anything like their non-migratory brethen, … deer hair mice at dusk, popped 'n hopped on a big pool or across a run.

Sorry, … I can’t help 'ya on multiple fly rigs, … illegal here.

In the estuary, … get out in front of the tide. (coming in or going out). Minnow imitations on any of the calf tail wing things. Muddler minnows of course, … with BIG tails like Rabbit strips or marabou muddlers. White!!

I don’t know anything about SRB’s but for SRC’s, steelies, and salmon, see Ron Lucas’ Atlantic Series for hundreds of patterns.

Alright…First of all you will get some good info in the “from Canada” section under “Features” on this site. Alot of luck has been had here on the avalon with Bead head nymphs of various colors and sizes, (The last Newfoundland Sportsman magazine had an article on the sea-run browns with fly recommendations). Sea lice, Small #18-22 Black flies with either a red or silver tag. If your using the bead heads you might want some sort of strike indicator with them. If fishing in the river use the beadheads with a upstream dead drift under a indicator. I’ve also had good luck with the partridge and orange wet on a downstream wet fly swing. poeple also use spinning gear with bell weights and short tags loaded with garden grubs and worm. The “nail” on the spinning gear has caught some massive browns. Basically a Nail flattened on the ends to accomodate split rings, attach a treble hook and paint it red. Hope this helps. Good luck with it.

Here are some sea-trout flies from Scotland you might like to try.

Dunkeld, the modern version, used a lot for sea and loch trout. The old salmon version is in ‘Old Flies’ this week.
Masson Grub, there a a few variants shown.
The Goat’s Toe, I don’t know how it got its name, but a very successful fly.
Silver Ghost, this is shown on a double, as such fish it on the point.
Poacher, a fly from Loch Lomond.
Medicine Fly, two versions.
Camasunary Killer, a fly from the Isle of Skye, blue seems to work on sea-trout over here.
There are a few others there as well, worth a try.
I seem to have neglected the sea trout pages lately, I’ll have to get them up to date.
Have a look under SALMON/SEA-TROUT on the front page.

Some of these flies are probably already in use over there but there may be something worth experimenting with.
In the larger sizes, stick to one fly, otherwise two or three in any combination.
Probably best one or two max.

I’ll try all of that advice over the summer, I’m sure. Newf, I just remembered that article this morning and have tracked down my copy of that Sportsman issue. Donald…that’s a great site! I’ll be checking that one out many times trying to work on those patterns…I don’t know how they’ll turn out, but hopefully the trout won’t be as picky as I am. lol.

Brad, if you find the same mag I have, tie a fly to look like one of those red nail polish covered nails the guy on the cover used.LOL. I have some stuff that would work. Red scale flash, got 2 for a buck on eBay. Here, we use a lot of salmon flies on the sae run browns- GP, Silver Dr.,and the Gray Ghost as well. Fishin’ the 'itch doesn’t hurt, either. Jamie
