Fishing Vest opinions

Just looking for some opinions. Last fall, someone decided they needed my Redington vest more than I did, so they helped themselves to it…fully loaded, of course. I’m looking for a new one. I’ve tried those chest-pack things and still find it more comfortable with a vest. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Orvis mesh vest? The reason I’m thinking about this one is I have a friend who works at Orvis, and I can get a real good deal on one. I like the mesh idea, since I have a propensity to perspire a great deal, and I’ve been told that particular vest is pretty cool when the temps. climb. Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

I have the LL Bean Magalloway Vest. I got it originally because I had Credit cards points, but haved grown to love it. It is very, very comfortable and has all the pockets and D-rings that I need.

My question is this - is there enough “mesh area” exposed that would make it cooler? If you get the mesh - let us know.

I’m looking at the Orvis Mesh Vest you mentioned and the Fishpond Sagebrush (http://www.fishpondusa.com/sagebrush.cfm) which I’m sure is sold through any number of FAOL sponsors.

I’m quite undecided. I really like the traditional vest and that’s what I’ve been using. I like the idea of mesh, especially in summer. Something about the fishpond looks good to me, but I’ve tried on several of their tech packs like this one http://www.fishpondusa.com/gorerange.cfm and they just seem really bulky and I don’t like all that stuff sticking out in front.

The Sagebrush does not stick out as much in front, but it is not laid out the same as a more traditional vest either.

For comparison, here is the Orvis mesh vest.

Decisions, Decisions.

I went to this:

Got tired of the vest.

I use it as a fanny pack. Holds more. Is more comfortable. The fly ‘work bench’ is fantastic.

I actually prefer my Columbia PFG fishing shirts coupled with a lanyard, but I also will at times wear a vest due to the stronger pockets to house my camera. The vest I occasionally wear is a “cheapie” Orvis with no inside pockets…I don’t need many at all. Being a “gear freak”, I HAVE looked at mesh vests, & considering function & cost, I would lean toward the Orvis Clearwater Mesh. I think Cabela’s has an inexpensive mesh vest too.

About 7 year ago I was in a Wal-Mart in Cloverdale, Indiana, where I purchased a B.A.S.S. light weight (not mesh) vest. Plenty of pockets, even specific ones for reels, along with a water proof big “creel” on the back. Light enough to wick away moisture but also provide some protection from the elements. Lots of room for zingers with a fly patch added by yours truly. Best $20 bucks I ever spent in my life. I believe that Wal-Mart in our area now sells fly vests.

I have a Simms mesh style vest. Like you I tend to run hot and the mesh sure does help. The Simms I have is around 5 years old and wears like iron for under $100. I think it retails for around $80. The one issue I have with mesh is when walking through brush is that sometimes I get caught up on the branches, but it has not been a big deal.

My advice on choosing a vest would be to take EVERYTHING you need to carry in it with you when you select one. Put everything where you think it ought to go, and see if it fits. Would be a shame to have the pockets 1/4" too small for your existing fly boxes, or have the zipper unreachable when the pocket is full, or…

The secret to not losing a vest is to have it be so grungy that people are afraid to touch it. Never wash one.

Good shopping.

Ken;
I also like mesh vests but also wanted a pocket high on the vest that would hold my camera. I looked at the Orvis and almost bought one. I found a White River vest at Bass Pro that is not only mesh but also has a water proof pocket that will survive a dunking. It’s even big enough to hold a cell phone too (Mine stays locked in my car, under the seat!). Plenty of pockets and one in the back for my raincoat.

Ken; “Choosing a vest/chest pack/waist pack” etc. is like choosing a new rod, reel or line or really ANY part of our obsession’s various paraphernalia… You can get a 100 different opinions, but it still boils down to personal preference.
Every one fishes differently, none of us carry the same amount, and/or, type of gear, accessories, or even sizes of fly boxes. So, the suggestion of “making sure, the one you buy, holds all the items you like to carry with you FIT!” is an excellent idea.
When it comes to buying one, then it will simply come down to “How much, do I want to spend, on my new vest?”
I’ve worn many, many styles and types and configurations of vests over the years I’ve fly fished. I’ve worn chest packs and waist packs, too.
For my personal preference, I think the vest I wear is every bit as important a piece of gear as my rods, reels and lines. I’m going to be in it, for probably all day, it has to carry all that I like carrying, hold up to brush, rocks, trees, fish slime,(on rare occasions) and water. AND, with all of this… above all… it HAS to be comfortable after 8-10 hours of having it on and I expect it last me for many, many, seasons.
So, when I decided I wanted a “mesh style/type vest”, I looked at many and settled, finally, on a Fishpond. “The Sagebrush” model, that Jeffnles mentioned. It’s built extremely well, sewn together tightly, the mesh is large enough to be very cool in hot weather, but yet, small enough not to be a problem in brush, etc.
The shoulder straps are fully adjustable for weight distribution, it has enough pockets,(inside as well as outside), that I actually, for the first time in many years, have an empty one and the many pockets of the vest are also laid out very well so the vest does not become too “poofy” out in front, or “bulky” at the sides, when fully loaded.
Others, as it should be, will have their own “favorite”. But, for “opinions sake”, the Fishpond mesh vest,(ONLY FOR ME PERSONALLY!), is a great vest and the best I’ve ever worn.

i use the filson shelter cloth strap vest. nice and cool and made in the USA!

I have had one of years and love it. Would not use any thing else

Definatly pesonal preference my wife gave last b-day cabela"s 3 in 1 vest so far I like it over my conventional vest explore all the options!

I used the Fishpond Gore Range last season and I loved it. I picked the Gore Range over other Fishpond products because I wanted vertical pockets and because the Gore Range did not have the hard shell fold down tray. I thought that the hard shells stuck out farther than the soft shells on my Gore Range. I wear mine over a .44 in a chest holster and I still don’t feel like it is in my way.

I prefer the C&F fly inserts to the Fishpond model, so I removed the Fishpond inserts and put velcro in the fold down trays and on the C&F fly insert and use them instead. I have one for dry flies and nymphs on one side and one for streamers on the other.

I also use the Simms Master Vertical Vest and the Simms Mess vest. Which one I will use depends on the type of fishing. The Gore Range is especially good for fishing streamers, nymphs, and egg imitations. I use the Simms a lot for stillwater fishing.

I just added the Fishpond Waterdance (20% off) for lake shore fishing and added the Fishpond Wastach (30% off) over the winter for hike in grayling trips.

I think that Fishpond products are very well made and very functional.
