Fish and more fish!

Wrap Up of the Florida 'FISH-IN 2004'
Final Thoughts on the Florida Fish-In.

By Jerry Brumfield (photos) and Harold Hattaway

I'd like to thank everyone that came, they were a wonderful group of people. We shared all kind of life stories. It was much fun. We got to see the parts of people that the web hides. The passion for life that each of these people have. Not just for fly fishing but for life.

L to R, PureBs, Robert & Reuel

PureBS

I thank Jeff at Mustad yet again for the hooks, we shared our favorite flies and we told stories of how to catch fish.

I would also like to thank Sara Bay Marina. This is a local bait and tackle shop that gave us the great tide chart that I included in the book I made up for everyone. They knew we were fly fishers and would not be buying anything from them, but still they gave us 30 charts with blessings.

Stev was a gracious guide taking us to his favorite spots. We never did get to go to my favorite spot, the wind just blew out of the wrong place.

Reuel and his new friend

Reuel (the lucky one) got to see a manatee, found Stev's non-replaceable knife and caught fish every day. No one else can say that.

Reuel's first sea trout

Reuel carries a ton of flies when he goes fishing, but Saltydancindave needed a pickup truck to bring his flies.

Dot Man's Heave Ho

Some caught fish, some like me did not. Oh well, the one day they were hitting I had to run an emergency call. MY LUCK.

Robert's first catch

We made new friends, face to face. We found out how many people FAOL has in our local area. I was shocked.

Slenon's Ladyfish

Mike gave us casting lessons, flies, leader-making lessons, and above all his valuable time. Mike was commuting and had about a 2 hour drive but was the first one at the cookout and the last to leave. His schedule only allowed him to be here on Sunday, but he was the hit of the party. Photos of the cookout below!

Garret taught everyone how to tie flies. (he is 4) but that did not stop him from giving a demo on how to tie. A huge thank you to everyone man and woman that took the time to make the kids feel special. It may have been grandpa's greatest memory of the Fish-In. The kids still talk about the friends they made.

Breakfast: From left to right Bill (PureBs) & Jill Sorbie, Robert Sutherland, Jerry Ray, Harold & Sue Hattaway, Dale Heilmann, and Bob (Reuel) & Marilyn Hook

We ate at the same place every morning, the food was ok but the people were great. For some reason I kept getting more food than I ordered and Reuel kept getting less. I think it may have had to do with fighting with the hostess, but I am not sure.

I sat and listened to people discussing their passions. It was not only fishing. But other things. Stev and Reuel spoke at great length about a college they share memories in. They also discussed the medical field. Some of us talked about computers. Some talked about their jobs. And we even had one teased about giving directions. Sorry Bill.

Harold and Sue

I now understand why fish-ins are so popular, Jill was here for some of the activities and now she and hubby Bill (purebs) are talking about hosting one.

I guess somewhere in here I should list the people that attended.

    Bill and Jill (purebs)
    Mike Franz (miamivice)
    Stev (slenon)
    Bob and Marilyn (Reuel)
    Jerry (Dotman)
    Dave Brody (Saltydancindave)
    Dale Heilman
    Robert Sutherland
    Mike and Sandy Andert
    Chuck and Wilma (Chuck S)
    Gerald and Kathleen
    Kevin
    Harold and Sue (Harold Hattaway)
If I forgot anyone please let me know, I'll take you to my favorite spot.

In my mind the Fish-In was a huge success. Now if I could just find a way to have one of these every week and make a living at the same time.

A great big thank you from Harold, Jerry, Sue, Philip, Stephanie, Garret, and Hannah. See you next year! ~ Harold and Jerry
