Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly.  With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you.  Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old.  Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today.  Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying
By Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer

Reviewed by Deanna Birkholm

We've been watching for this one, and it has arrived. Ted Leeson and Jim Schollmeyer, authors of the very successful The Fly Tiers' Benchside Reference, have written and photographed (Jim does a wonderful job on fly photography) the first beginner's book of fly tying which allows readers to simultaneously access both the fly recipe (with step-by-step instructions) and the techniques. No more flipping back and forth from fly patterns to techniques, (while hoping the wings don't fall off your mayfly.)

The first 50 pages of this oversized, spiral-bound (so it lies flat on your bench) book are filled with wonderfully photographed fly-tying techniques, over 1500 photos. The next 150 pages are cut horizontally across the page. (Shown below). The top pages show the tying steps for 110 flies, (nymphs, wets, streamers, emergers, dries, terrestrials, and terrestrials) including references to tying techniques which are explained step-by-step on the bottom pages.

An example of the tying instruction can be seen in the Fly of the Week, the Soft Hackle Fly HERE.

When you see the split-page design of this book, you're going to wonder "Why hasn't this been done before." ~ DLB
