First Fish on a Fly

By Mark Ranson, Hong Kong

Dear Deanna,
We corresponded some months ago when I asked about fly fishing in Hong Kong. Well, last Sunday I caught my first fish on fly, a small silver carp that left a big smile on my face. I said thank you and returned it to the water (see picture - hands wet to minimize trauma of course).

I caught this fish in the High Island Reservoir. It's a beautiful area of the New Territories called Sai Kung and it was here that the film The Sand Pebbles with Steve McQueen was filmed before the reservoir was finished in 1978. Crystal clear waters, flat as a millpond with lovely soft autumn light; hard to believe that one is in Hong Kong.

I believe there are 17 reservoirs around HK where the license allows you to fish. The license costs roughly US $2 (yes, two US Dollars) for three years and the season is from 1 September to 31 March (Purchase from the Water Supplies Department). Outside that, saltwater fishing is free. It is my understanding the reservoirs have also been planted with Black Bass!

Best wishes,
Mark Ranson, Hong Kong
