Mustad Quality Hooks
Mustad has more than 100 years of fly hook experience. Many patterns still retained date back half a century. In spite of this long experience, Mustad's processes and technology have been continuously renewed and refined. The study of insects is fundamental in modern fly fishing, and is therefore an all important criteria in fly hook design. Mustad has combined entomology and hook making into a totally new approach to fly hooks. Hooks are designed to meet specific properties of the insect´s anatomy without compromising presentation and action in fishing.

Chromie

Each month Mustad will present a fly here, featuring one of our hooks, complete with tying instructions and fishing suggestions. When you buy hooks we hope you will consider Mustad and Partridge first.

A great chironomid pattern

Materials List:

    Hooks:  C49S (Mustad Signature Series Hook) size 8-12 Substitute's - 80250BR, Partridge YK4A.

    Thread:  14/0 Griffiths - black.

Body:  Silver Holographic Fly Fiber (single strand) or tinsel.

Rib:  Holographic Tinsel (Medium) - Red.

    Thorax:  Peacock Hurl.

    Head:  Black bead (tungsten).

Gills:  Antron yarn or similar - White.

Tying Instructions:

Step 1: Slide the bead onto the C49S and place the hook in the vise. Secure the thread to the hook up near the eye while leaving the bead to rest on the jaws of the vise.

Step 2: Secure a sparse clump of white Antron right behind the eye of the hook so that about ¼ inch extends out beyond the eye. Take care not to build up a heavy base of thread or the bead will not slide on properly. Trim the other end of the Antron closely.

Step 3: Tie off the thread and slide the bead up the shank of the hook so that it is resting right against the eye. Trim the Antron gills so that they are about the same length as the bead is wide.

Step 4: Reattach the thread to the hook shank. Attach a single strand of your Silver Holographic Fly Fiber and a single strand of the holographic red tinsel and wrap the thread up to the bead.

Step 5: Begin wrapping the tinsel around the hook shank tightly, being careful not to leave any gaps. Wrap right up to the bead, secure it and trim the excess. Now wrap the Larva Lace around the hook shank spacing the ribs evenly. Wrap up to the eye, secure and trim the excess.

Step 6: Secure a strand of peacock hurl behind the bead and wrap about 4 turns around the hook. Secure it, trim the excess and whip finish. A touch of head cement and you're ready to go.

Fishing Suggestions:

This is a great stillwater fly. Mustad Prostaffer Phil Rowley was the originator of the pattern. Phil is also the author of Fly Patterns for Stillwaters, with a lot of great patterns.

I've also done well with this fly in creeks and rivers as well, but stillwater situations is where it really shines. I like to fish this fly on a light, fluorocarbon tippet suspended under an easily visible dry fly such as an elk hair caddis or Parachute. Check your regulations though as some areas restrict you to one fly. If this is the case it is best to use a strike indicator (instead of nothing at all) as the take can be very subtle. While a totally still drift is effective I have had my best luck with this fly twitching it from time to time.

I've had great success with this fly on some beautiful Kamloops rainbows in British Columbia last Spring as well as some nice rainbows and browns on some local lakes here in Upstate NY. ~ Jeff Pierce
